Founded in 1869, Banco Espirito Santo became the second largest bank from Portugal. However, in 2014 the bank announced the end to its formal operations as an entity in and of itself after which it broke apart.
Currently, the bank’s website declares it in a state of liquidation and mainly provides disclosure of information to creditors and to any other interested parties.
As of 2010, when the bank was still fully operational, the number of employees working for Banco Espirito Santo reached a high point of 9,860 persons and a maximum of 2.1 million customers.
